Dental Implants Side Effects

Of the available restorative treatments, dental implants tend to stand out because of their effectiveness, durability, and a number of other benefits. But dental implants, just as natural teeth, require routine care to assure their longevity. Improper care can affect the health of our whole smile, as well as lead to unwelcome dental implant side effects, effects that could risk the treatment itself. Learn more about the precautions necessary when caring for dental implants and expectations regarding the procedure by reaching out to our Fountain Valley, CA, dentist Dr. Robert Mokbel of SoCal Prosthodontics.

Initial Recovery

Dental implants have many benefits over alternative treatments, but they do require a longer initial investment of time as they can take a few months after surgery before the implant is ready for the final crown. During the first days after it's normal to notice bruising, swelling, and pain at the implant area. Pain medication along with antibiotics are typically prescribed within this time to help the healing along. While the healing is not done after these effects subside, they should begin to ease within a week, so it's important to consult with the dentist if there are any complications.

Implant Failure

After the healing period is complete and the final restoration is placed it's when dental implants pay their dividends. The restored tooth is one that functions, feels, and looks just like a natural tooth. They also don't require much in the way of special care, just like with natural teeth, regular flossing and brushing along with regular office visits for checkups and cleanings, which can allow these to last a lifetime. But even though these teeth are not susceptible to cavities, the same bacteria can lead to gum disease which will damage our gums and the supporting tissues, including bone, that hold our dental implant in place. The effects to be on the lookout for are inflammation at the site of the implant, loose restoration, and severe pain, all of which can eventually cause the dental implant to fail.

Dental Implants in Fountain Valley, CA

While some side effects are normal and part of the recovery for dental implants, these should be monitored by our dentist as we continue to heal. Once the implants are in place we need to maintain good dental habits to keep symptoms from gum disease from arising.
